Introduction
The Summit is aimed at investigating and understanding how Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) can be achieved within the planetary boundaries. The summit shall engage key stakeholders in discourse to x-ray development process, bearing in mind the myriad of challenges that developing countries face. This year’s Summit is jointly organized by the University of Ibadan Centre for Sustainable Development in conjunction with African Sustainable Development Network (ASUDNET), and Sustainable Development Solutions Network – Nigeria (NSDSN).
Human activities are generally channelled towards improvement and development of communities and the world in general. However, these activities also impinge on the environment and if humans do not act responsibly in their actions, there are possibilities for them to pass certain thresholds or tipping points, defined as “planetary boundaries”. Once this happens, there is the risk of “irreversible and abrupt environmental change. Responsibilities on the part of human beings include responsible production and consumption, responsible population growth, responsible human capital (education and health) accumulation among others. All these actions while they can lead to development, also challenge the resilience of the planet to support human activity.
The fundamental question is how our societies can develop in a just and safe way within the planet’s boundaries. Some query the concept of planetary boundaries, in particular whether we face risks of abrupt, irreversible changes, with potentially catastrophic implications for poverty alleviation and human development.
This Summit will therefore explore the various theoretical and practical ways of understanding current debates in the global sustainability arena and emerging examples of approaches and solutions currently being developed and deployed so that the Sustainable Development Goals can be effectively and efficiently achieved both individually and collectively.
