Fifth Annual Ibadan Sustainable Development Summit Held in Ibadan, Nigeria

The 5th annual Ibadan Sustainable Development Summit (ISDS) was held during 25-29 August, 2014. It was hosted by the University of Ibadan Centre for Sustainable Development (CESDEV) in collaboration with the African Sustainable Development Network (ASUDNET) and Nigeria Sustainable Development Solutions Network (NSDSN) with the support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (UN-SDSN). Over 180 persons including researchers, development practitioners and students from USA, Italy, Finland, Ghana, and Nigeria participated at the summit.

The theme for summit was “Sustainable Development in Pre-colonial, Colonial and Post-colonial Africa: Issues and Contexts”. Professor Sola Olopade, Clinical Director, Centre for Global Health, University of Chicago, USA, and Professor Jeffrey D. Sachs, Director, Earth Institute, Columbia University, USA delivered keynote addresses. Contributions were in the form plenary and technical papers. A total of 84 papers were presented by invited resource persons, scholars, researchers, and students. The various topics that were critically x-rayed include, development models and their sectoral impacts; inter-generational analysis of politics, leadership and governance; perspectives of sectoral development (health, agriculture, education, transport and infrastructure, industry, business, entrepreneurship,  oil and gas, housing, and other sectors); indigenous knowledge and development practices, tourism and heritage management; environmental and natural resources management; Africa in the dynamic world of science and technology; and regional economic blocks, partnerships and education for sustainable development in Africa;   and conflicts in pre-colonial, colonial and post- colonial Africa. Far-reaching policy recommendations were provided which have implications for development practice and sustainable development solutions in Africa.
